Attendance/Tardiness Policy: Please come to class every day. Missing class will not result in a lower grade; however, attendance may be used to determine grades that are on the border (see below). Please try to be in class on time. Class will begin promptly at 7:15 every evening. Should you come in late, try to minimize the disturbance to the rest of the class. In case you miss lecture, slides will be available on the website on the Syllabus page. Do not ask me what was covered in a class that you missed, as your course outline and the lecture slides should cover this.

Make-up Policy: There will be no make-up tests (midterm or final) without a valid excuse. If you have a legitimate conflict with a test date or time, please let me know at least 24 hours in advance. There is no guarantee that you will be able to make up a missed test. Make-ups will not be given for quizzes without a legitimate excuse.

Withdrawal Policy: Durham Tech's withdrawal policy is that the student can officially withdraw from the course by the 60 percent point of the semester () and receive a grade of W. To officially withdraw, the student must complete and submit an official withdrawal form at the Admissions and Registration Office prior to the 60 percent point of the semester. Students who do not do this will not be officially withdrawn and will receive a final grade for the class that takes into account all of the work completed with zero credit for work that is missed or not completed. You do not drop the class merely by ceasing to attend. The instructor will not fill out drop forms nor assume responsibility for delivering drop forms to the Registration Office. The entire process is initiated and carried out by the student and the Registration Office. The instructor will only sign and date forms which the Office presents to him/her.

Assignments and Grading: I expect each student to attend class every day and to participate in class discussion. Attendance and participation will not be graded directly, but grades that are on the border could be helped by active engagement in class.

The grading scale is as follows:

A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F = 0 - 59

Grades will be rounded up from .5. That is, if you have an 89.5, you will receive an A. Other borderline grades will be determined based on class participation and attendance. If you have an 88.9 and attend class every day with active participation, your final grade will be an A. If you have an 89.3 and rarely attend class, though, your grade will be a B.

Late Assignments: I will accept late assignments without penalty only if you have made arrangements with me ahead of time. If you fail to turn in a take-home quiz, paper, or other assignment, for each class period the assignment is late, 5 points will be deducted. If an assignment is due Monday and you fail to submit it until the following Monday, you will lose 10 points, or at least one letter grade.

Academic Dishonesty: I will not tolerate cheating in this class. Academic dishonesty refers to unauthorized collaboration on quizzes, tests, papers, and other assignments. Any work that involves academic dishonesty will receive an automatic F and will be reported to the Dean. This does not mean that you cannot study together and exchange ideas. It means that you cannot speak with another student about the contents of a test and that you cannot plagiarize, among other things. If you have any question about what constitutes cheating, please ask me. Academic dishonesty is a serious violation and a moral issue. Institutional measures may be enacted. If you wish to use ideas or images from a book, magazine, article, etc. in a term paper, please cite it. We will discuss how to cite literature in class.

Statement of Student Academic Accomodation: Students who require academic accomodations due to any physical, psychological, or learning disability should request assistance from the Disabilities Services Coordinator within the first two weeks of the semester. Likewise, students who may require emergency medical attention due to a chronic health condition are encouraged to notify the Disabilities Services Coordinator within the first two weeks of the semester. Students can contact the Disabilities Services Coordinator by calling 686-3606 (V/TT) or by visiting the Counseling Services Office, Room 23, White Building.

Statement Regarding the Campus Learning Center/Tutorial Services: Tutorial services are available to Durham Tech students in a variety of academic subjects in the Campus Learning Center (CLC), on the lower level of the library. This term's schedule of free tutorial services is available in the CLC and is posted on bulletin boards around campus. Students are encouraged to make use of this free campus resource. For more information, call the CLC at 686-3554 or consult the CLC web pages available via the Durham Tech homepage.

Cell Phones/Pagers: Please turn off (or put in silent mode) all cell phones and pagers during class. If a cell phone or pager goes off in class, I will stop class and ask you to either turn it off or leave the room.
